═══════════════ ══ "The Scholars' Categorization of Shi'ite Sects" ═ ═══ •⊰❂⊱• ════ 🌿 First: The categorization of Imam al-Ash'ari, may Allah have mercy on him
❖ As for Imam al-Ash'ari, may Allah have mercy on him, he establishes the foundational sects of the Shi'a as three: the Ghulat (extremists), the Rafida (Imamiyyah), and the Zaydiyyah. The total number of Shi'ite sects according to him reaches forty-five, as he categorized the Ghulat into fifteen sects, the Rafida into twenty-four sects, and the Zaydiyyah into six sects. He considers the Twelvers to be among the sects of the Rafida (Imamiyyah) and calls them the Qat'iyyah, describing them as the majority of the Shi'a. A group of heresiographers and others followed al-Ash'ari's method in dividing the main Shi'ite sects into three, such as: al-Razi, who named them: Zaydiyyah, Imamiyyah, and Kaysaniyyah; and like al-Isfarayini; and likewise Ibn al-Murtada, who said: 'The Shi'a are three: Zaydiyyah, Imamiyyah, and Batiniyyah'; and Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, who classified the Shi'a into three ranks, the worst of which is the Ghulat—and they are those who attribute something of divinity to Ali or describe him with prophethood; the second rank, which is the Rafida; and the third rank, the Mufaddilah from the Zaydiyyah and others who prefer Ali over Abu Bakr and Umar, but believe in their imamate and uprightness and take them as allies; along with other scholars of sects and doctrines. 🌿 Second: The categorization of Abd al-Qahir al-Baghdadi
❖ As for Abd al-Qahir al-Baghdadi, he traces the Shi'ite sects back to four: Zaydiyyah, Imamiyyah, Kaysaniyyah, and Ghulat, and he labels them all as the Rafida. The number of Shi'ite sects according to him—excluding the extremist sects—reaches twenty. He considers the Twelvers among the Imamiyyah sects and calls them the Qat'iyyah, just as he calls them the Twelvers, although prior to that he mentioned the Qat'iyyah and the Twelvers as names for two distinct sects among the Imamiyyah, not a single sect. 🌿 Third: The categorization of al-Shahrastani
❖ As for al-Shahrastani, he considers the Shi'a to be numerous sects, for he says: 'Regarding the transmission of the Imamate, they have much dispute and controversy, and at each transmission and cessation there is a doctrine, a school, and confusion.' However, he traces them back to five sects: Kaysaniyyah, Zaydiyyah, Imamiyyah, Ghulat, and Isma'iliyyah. 🌿 Fourth: The categorization of the author of "Al-Hur al-In"
❖ As for the author of "Al-Hur al-In", he traces the numerous Shi'ite sects back to six sects, while the number of Shi'ite sects according to Ibn Qutaybah reaches eight. 🌿 Fifth: The categorization of Abu al-Husayn al-Malati
❖ Abu al-Husayn al-Malati considers the Shi'a to be eighteen sects and labels them all as the Rafida, and al-Saksaki concurs with him in this view in his book "Al-Burhan fi Ma'rifat Aqa'id Ahl al-Adyan". But the strange thing is that al-Malati calls the Twelvers Isma'ilis. 🌿 Sixth: The categorization of Ibn al-Jawzi
❖ Ibn al-Jawzi considers the Shi'a to be twelve sects and calls them the Rafida, and Imam al-Qurtubi agrees with him on this categorization. ⚠️ Note regarding the application of the name 'the Rafida'
What should be noted regarding the application of the name 'the Rafida' to all Shi'ite sects is that the Zaydiyyah ought to be excluded—or more precisely, the Zaydiyyah with the exception of the Jarudiyyah sect among them; because the Jarudiyyah followed the path of the Rafida. For that reason, the shaykh of the Shi'a, al-Mufid, considered the Jarudiyyah to be the true Shi'a, and those besides them among the Zaydiyyah sects not to be Shi'a, because the Jarudiyyah sect is the one that shares with him the foundation of his doctrine of Rafd. 🌿 Heresiographical books among the Twelvers
❖ As for the books of sects among the Twelver Shi'a, they adopt another methodology in mentioning sects; they mention the Shi'ite sects according to the Imams, where you find that the Shi'a splintered into many sects after the death of each Imam. The number of Shi'ite sects in "Al-Maqalat wa al-Firaq" by al-Qummi and "Firaq al-Shi'ah" by al-Nawbakhti reached upwards of sixty sects. It is noted that the Twelvers, according to al-Nawbakhti and al-Qummi, were one sect out of fourteen or fifteen sects into which the Shi'a splintered after the death of al-Hasan al-Askari in the year (260 AH). 🌿 Al-Kulayni's narration regarding Shi'ite sects
❖ As for the books of narration among them, al-Kulayni in "Al-Kafi" mentions a narration that makes the Shi'ite sects thirteen, all of which are in the Fire except one. And these sects have not perished—as it is said—rather, most of them remain, peering out at us through Twelver thought. Contemporary Shi'ite Sects
Contemporary Shi'ite sects have been narrowed down to three sects, which are:
1- The Twelvers.
2- The Isma'ilis.
3- The Zaydiyyah.
And the Twelver sect is the largest of the sects today, just as it represented the majority of the Shi'a and their main body during certain historical eras. A group of heresiographers described them as the majority of the Shi'a, and among those who characterized them as such were: al-Ash'ari, al-Mas'udi, Abd al-Jabbar al-Hamadhani, Ibn Hazm, and Nashwan al-Himyari. This majority status of the Twelvers was not present in all eras; for we note—for instance—that Ibn Khaldun states that the Shi'a of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah were the majority of the Shi'a of Ahl al-Bayt—that is, in its era—then before long its followers shrank until it disappeared. Likewise, al-Balkhi says—as the author of "Al-Hur al-In" quotes from him—: that the Fathiyyah were the greatest sect of the Ja'fariyyah and the largest in number—meaning, in his time.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
(1) They are the followers of Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq, and he was the eldest of al-Sadiq's sons. They were named the Fathiyyah because Abdullah had a broad, flat head (aftah al-ra's), just as they are claimed to be associated with the turban after a leader of theirs known as Ammar. Al-Nawbakhti said that the majority of Shi'ite scholars and jurists inclined toward this sect, but Abdullah lived for only seventy days after the death of his father, so they retracted the claim of his imamate. The author of "Al-Zinah", Abu Hatim al-Razi the Isma'ili, who passed away in the year (322 AH), said: 'This sect has become extinct, and no one adheres to this doctrine anymore; Abdullah lived for seventy days after his father and left no male offspring.' ══════════════ ✍🏻 The book of our Shaykh Abu Abd al-Rahman Rashad al-Dhali'i, may Allah preserve him
