*Results of Iraqi investigations: A group linked to the Revolutionary Guard and the Houthis is behind the attack on the Saudi "East-West" pipeline* - Investigations revealed that the perpetrators of the attack entered Iraq illegally
- The attack was carried out with the cooperation of a well-known Iraqi armed faction without the knowledge of the faction's leadership
- More than 15 booby-trapped drones were used in carrying out the attack, which took place simultaneously Three Iraqi officials in Baghdad revealed to "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" that the security investigations into the attack that targeted the Saudi "East-West" pipeline on the tenth of the current month of September, which was launched from Maysan Governorate in southern Iraq, are nearing completion, pointing out that a group linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and the "Ansar Allah" movement (Houthis) in Yemen was behind the assault. The officials explained that the final report on the investigation results will be submitted to Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in the near future, after completing a number of technical and security procedures. "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" spoke to three Iraqi officials in the Joint Operations Command and the National Security Advisory through separate meetings over the past few days, who confirmed that the investigations into the attack have been completed and "important" results have been reached. How was the attack on the "East-West" pipeline carried out? One of the officials, a senior commander in the Iraqi army, said that the investigations concluded that the drone attack actually originated from the Al-Teeb border area in Maysan Governorate, and that more than 15 booby-trapped drones were used in carrying out the attack simultaneously. The investigation teams, according to the Iraqi official, were able to gather field and intelligence information and evidence related to the launch sites and the movement of the operatives who took part in the operation, as well as the movement routes of the equipment used in carrying out the attack. Another security official confirmed this information, pointing out that "investigations revealed that the individuals who participated in carrying out the attack entered Iraqi territory days before its execution coming from Iran, illegally, and headed to the Al-Teeb border area, where the drones were prepared and the launch operation was carried out toward Saudi territory, before the same individuals returned to Iranian territory following the execution of the attack and the entry operation into Iraq," noting that the process of entering and exiting Iraq took place outside official border crossings, illegally, and in cooperation with cells inside Iraq that provided them with assistance. He explained that "investigations confirmed that the party that communicated with them from inside Iraq is linked to an armed faction and in coordination with the Yemeni Houthi movement." Another official confirmed that the investigation committee concluded that the group that cooperated and facilitated the work of those arriving from Iran to carry out the attack belongs to a well-known armed faction, "but the faction's leadership had no prior knowledge of the attack and did not participate in planning or execution." He revealed that "the information reached by the competent Iraqi authorities regarding the identity of the executing group, the nature of its external links, and the routes of its operatives entering and exiting Iraq, was handled as among the most important results of the investigation, especially since the operation was carried out from a sensitive border area inside Iraqi territory and targeted vital installations on Saudi territory, which prompted the security apparatuses to expand the scope of the investigation to include the individuals who entered Iraq, the parties that aided their movement, and the networks that provided them with facilities inside the country." The source continued that the Iraqi Foreign Ministry informed its Iranian counterpart of the information reached by the Iraqi investigations, including the data regarding the identity of the operatives participating in the operation and the nature of the executing group's affiliation, as well as the information related to the process of those operatives entering and exiting Iraqi territory, noting that the Iraqi side presented to Iran the information and evidence it possesses in this regard, but Tehran has not responded, to date, to what Baghdad provided in terms of information and evidence. He revealed a move by the Iraqi government to request the representation of the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement (Houthi) to leave Iraq, but there is pressure from political parties in the "Coordination Framework" to dissuade the government from this measure, which it decided to take based on evidence of their involvement in coordinating the attack, and because their presence in Iraq has exceeded political or social work. The source also revealed that the competent Iraqi security and intelligence apparatuses are currently working on tracking the individuals involved in receiving the Iranian elements, while discussing several guarantees to prevent the recurrence of the attack. The final report will be submitted to Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, containing the results of the security, intelligence, and technical investigations, including the launch site of the drones, their number, the nature of their use, the entry and exit routes of the participating elements, the parties standing behind the operation, and the networks working with them inside Iraq, alongside the measures proposed by the security authorities to deal with those networks and prevent the recurrence of using Iraqi territory to carry out attacks outside the country. What is expected of Iraq In his comment on these developments, strategic affairs expert Hussein Al-Asaad told "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" that "the Iraqi investigations regarding the attack that targeted the East-West pipeline in Saudi Arabia are more serious and thorough than previous investigations related to attacks launched from Iraqi territory, as previous investigations regarding similar attacks originating from Iraqi territory did not reach clear and announced results, and many files remained without identifying the responsible entities or persons, which made them vulnerable to political and security interpretations." Al-Asaad explains that "the current investigation is different in terms of its reliance on field evidence, intelligence investigations, and tracking the movement of the perpetrators and the networks that provided them with support. Furthermore, the importance of the current investigation lies not only in determining the launch site of the drones, but in reaching the full cycle of the operation, starting from the entry of the operatives into Iraqi territory, passing through the process of preparing and launching the drones, and ending with tracking the exit routes and the parties that provided facilities." He adds that "Baghdad's seriousness will be measured during the coming phase by its ability to translate the investigation results into actual measures, whether inside Iraq or through diplomatic channels with the countries to which the accused parties are linked. Submitting the final report to the Prime Minister represents an important step, but what is most important is the subsequent measures, accountability, and preventing the recurrence of using Iraqi territory to carry out attacks against other countries." Hours after the attack was carried out, Al-Zaidi had issued a decision relieving the police chief and the operations commander in Maysan Governorate of their posts and referring the directors of security apparatuses in the province to investigation. Al-Zaidi also directed the formation of an investigative council regarding the Maysan Operations Command—a joint security command tasked with coordinating and managing the work of security forces in Maysan Governorate in southern Iraq—against the backdrop of the attack and the launch of the drones from inside the governorate. Maysan Governorate acquires special significance in this file due to its geographical location bordering Iran and the extension of its borders for vast distances with the Iranian side, in addition to the presence of rugged and remote border areas that make monitoring unofficial cross-border movement more complicated, representing a challenge for security apparatuses in controlling infiltration and unauthorized entry and exit outside official border crossings. Moreover, Maysan is considered one of the governorates where Iraqi armed factions active and still refusing to surrender their weapons operate, including the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, Harakat al-Nujaba, Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, and other factions that possess strategic depth, organizational presence, and broad influence inside the governorate, making tracking individuals and sites linked to any unofficial military activity extremely complicated, especially in border and remote areas.
