Newspaper: Cairo rejects a Houthi proposal for maritime coordination in the Red Sea The newspaper "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" revealed that the Egyptian authorities rejected a proposal submitted by the Houthi militia to conduct direct contacts with its representatives, aimed at coordinating with the Suez Canal Authority and Egyptian ports regarding maritime navigation in Bab al-Mandab and the Red Sea. According to the report, the Houthi proposal came via the International Chamber of Shipping in London, after a Houthi official conveyed a request to establish contacts related to instituting new arrangements to secure navigation and maritime safety in the Bab al-Mandab area. The report quoted an Egyptian source as saying that the request for formal communication was met with an absolute refusal by the head of the Suez Canal Authority, Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, to avoid granting the Houthi militia—given that it is an internationally unrecognized party—any implicit recognition by entering into formal communications with it. The source indicated that the Egyptian authorities referred the proposal to security bodies to handle away from official institutions, as part of efforts to ensure navigation safety and halt attacks on ships passing through Bab al-Mandab, without allowing any authority to be imposed over the international strait. The report added that Egypt adheres to its recognition of the legitimate Yemeni government and does not grant the Houthi militia any official recognition, while Egyptian sovereign bodies handle files linked to the repercussions of the Yemeni conflict on the security of the Red Sea, ship traffic, and the Suez Canal. "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" also quoted a source in the Suez Canal Authority saying that the Houthi militia had previously submitted a similar proposal to the International Chamber of Shipping in London to hold an international conference to organize navigation in Bab al-Mandab, but the proposal was rejected due to the lack of international recognition of the group. This comes in light of the strategic importance of the Bab al-Mandab Strait as one of the most prominent international maritime corridors and the main link between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and the direct importance navigation security within it represents for ship traffic heading to and from the Suez Canal. ⚔️ News from the Battlefield ⚔️ 0029Vb8t8jE6xCSSfkpK1C1r
